BLACK FINISH
INSPIRED BY MEOK (墨)
The WHALER 4-Slot Watch Case Black retains the structural philosophy of the original 4-slot model,
reinterpreted with a focus on WHALER’s black finishing method.
This black is not a color option.
It is a finishing approach, and a way of working with material.
-
BLACK IS NOT A COLOR THAT COVERS
The WHALER 4-Slot Black is not made from naturally black wood.
It is crafted from solid North American walnut, finished using a black dyeing process inspired by Meok (墨), the traditional black medium used in East Asian calligraphy and painting.
Like Meok, the color does not sit on the surface. It penetrates the material, allowing tone and depth to form from within.
Rather than coating the wood, the black finish is absorbed along the grain, so the grain remains visible.
Depth emerges within the black. -
GRAIN REVEALED BY LIGHT, DEPTH FORMED IN BLACK
Depending on lighting and viewing angle, the natural grain of walnut subtly appears beneath the black surface.
This is not the result of covering the material, but of coloring it in a way that respects its structure.
This black is not decorative. It is structural.
A result of material and finish working together. -
DETAILS CHOSEN TO COMPLETE THE BLACK
The 4-slot Black edition does not use brass components. Instead, stainless steel is applied to maintain tonal balance with the black surface.
By reducing unnecessary contrast, the design allows focus to remain on form, surface, and the depth of the black itself.
Every detail is selected not for ornament or function alone, but for how it contributes to the overall impression of black. -
INTERIOR BOTTOM OPTIONS
The Black edition offers a choice for the interior bottom.
One option is a black-dyed walnut bottom panel, finished in a deep black tone that maintains the visible grain and completes an uninterrupted presence.
The other is a solid Hinoki bottom panel, left natural to introduce a quiet contrast and subtle warmth.

Q&A
Q. Will the watch slip or fall at a 35-degree angle?
A. Each stand is fitted with a silicone non-slip pad that stabilizes the case back of the watch.
From heavier diver watches to lighter dress watches, the structure maintains stable display.
Q. Can watches larger than 42 mm be placed?
A. While the recommended size range is 36–42 mm, the spacing between stands allows watches in the 44–45 mm range to be placed without interference.
Q. Is the linked movement mechanism reliable over time?
A. The mechanism is based on precise structural design and uses metal components rather than simple wood joints.
Repeated opening and closing tests have confirmed stable operation under everyday use.
Q. Will the black finish transfer color or peel over time?
A. Because the finish is achieved through deep staining rather than surface paint, the color does not easily transfer or peel.
With proper drying and finishing, the wood retains its texture while maintaining color stability in normal use.
Q. Why are there small gaps along the sides of the case?
A. These gaps are intentional tolerance allowances, not defects.
Wood naturally expands and contracts with changes in temperature and humidity.
The structure includes controlled spacing to minimize warping or cracking over long-term use.
Q. The inner stands move slightly side to side. Is this normal?
A. Yes. This subtle movement is part of the tolerance design that absorbs dimensional changes in solid wood.
Allowing this flexibility reduces structural stress and supports long-term stability.
